The WBA light heavyweight title fight between Dmitry Bivol and Gilberto “Zuldo” Ramirez will take place on November 5 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
Organised by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and Matchroom Boxing, the match marks the start of a major boxing event in the emirate.
It goes up against two other undefeated boxers, champion Bivor 20-0 (11 KOs) in May keep the belt Victory with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The 31-year-old Russian is widely regarded as one of the top 10 boxers in the world. He will defend his WBA crown for the ninth time in the Emirates’ first major title fight.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Bivor said: “The fight against ‘Zuldo’ has been brewing for some time – a lot has been said. Now we have an opportunity to deal with things with our actions in the ring , not what we said outside the ring.”
Ramirez, meanwhile, has a 44-0 (30 KO) career record, and his past five victories have been at light heavyweight. A former super middleweight champion, the Mexican also beat Dominic Boesel in May. The win puts Ramirez, 31, at the top of the title race as he tries to end Biwall’s nearly five-year reign at 175 pounds.
“Despite all the challenges, I’m glad this fight is finally happening,” Ramirez said. “It’s been a long time and I’m looking forward to a great night on November 5. I’ll be with Bivol anywhere. Fights – including Mars, but I know we’re going to put on a great show in Abu Dhabi.”
The two fighters will discuss the event with Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn in the capital on Wednesday. While Bivol-Ramirez represents the first of a new “Championship Series” partnership between DCT-Abu Dhabi and Matchroom, Abu Dhabi has a rich recent history in showcasing combat sports. UFC is a regular in the emirate – the world’s leading MMA promotion UFC 280 returns in October – while the Etihad Arena hosted an exhibition boxing match in May, which included Five-time world champion Floyd Mayweather.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, Hearn said: “Dmitri Bivol has now secured himself pound-for-pound after his victory over Sol Canelo Alvarez in May, And hopefully a very important defense against mandatory challenger and former world champion Gilberto Ramirez.
“This card will be stacked with a world title fight and will be one of the biggest boxing nights of 2022.”
Saleh Mohamed Saleh Al Geziry, Director General of Tourism, DCT Abu Dhabi, added: “We are delighted to host this spectacular boxing event in Abu Dhabi. Working with renowned partner Matchroom Boxing adds another dimension to our exciting calendar .
“The world’s eyes will once again be on Abu Dhabi on 5 November as we continue to cement our position as the premier destination for world-class sports. As host city, we are eager to share the UAE’s warm hospitality with visiting fans and Give them an unforgettable, exciting experience that they can enjoy at their own pace.”
