According to Global Navigation Services’ annual survey of 416 cities in 57 countries, Abu Dhabi is ranked as the least congested capital in the world according to the 2021 TomTom Traffic Index.
The new ranking of the UAE capital is based on a composite criterion, including traffic congestion rates at intersections and streets at different times of the day, including rush hour. The study also analyzed the number of traffic lights and their planning and contribution to the development of urban traffic flow. It also examines the quality of traffic light systems in terms of long-term viability and weather resistance.
Abu Dhabi’s congestion rate of 11% reflects the impact of a comprehensive traffic management plan implemented by the Ministry of Municipalities and Transport. The department’s strategy includes improving operational efficiency, improving road assets and infrastructure, and increasing the number of public transport options and modes to ensure optimal use of traffic and necessary utilities to improve the quality of daily life for residents.
