Abu Dhabi University opens 3D concrete printing research lab

[ad_1]

As part of an ongoing effort to provide students with unique learning opportunities, Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has opened a 3D concrete printing research laboratory on its campus.

Set up by ADU’s Faculty of Engineering, the laboratory uses advanced 3D printing technology to facilitate the prototyping of concrete structures.

A statement from ADU said the technology is capable of creating complex shapes and designs that are difficult to achieve using traditional construction methods.

3D printing technology enables creative and unique architectural designs. In addition, it promotes sustainable construction practices by enabling accurate measurements and minimizing raw material waste during construction and reducing energy consumption due to reduced raw material transportation needs and construction time compared to traditional construction methods.

It said the lab was the result of ADU’s recent win of the prestigious ASPIRE grant awarded by the UAE’s Advanced Technology Research Council.

A research team led by Dr Samer Al Martini, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, and Dr Reem Sabouni, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at ADU, has been awarded a grant to study the application of 3D concrete technology in the UAE construction industry to help promote a sustainable construction sector in the UAE.

The lab provides faculty and students with state-of-the-art 3D printing equipment, including a 3D Concrete Gantry Lab Printer. The first of its kind in a UAE University laboratory, the printer can produce a wide range of laboratory-scale concrete structural elements (e.g. columns, beams, walls) in different shapes and sizes.

Through similar innovative learning opportunities, ADU aims to develop students’ innovation and creativity in the fields of 3D concrete printing and sustainable development.

The lab will also contribute to ADU’s environmental sustainability efforts by reducing waste and material use, improving energy efficiency, and encouraging innovative design by faculty and students. It will also help create a more inclusive environment for women to participate in male-dominated industries, as 3D concrete printing is a less labor-intensive construction technique that relies more on technology.

ADU Principal Professor Ghassan Aouad said: “The 3D Concrete Printing Lab represents a major step forward in the field of construction technology. With this facility, we seek to provide our students and staff with the tools and tools to explore new ideas and push boundaries. Possibilities in the field of resources.”

“At ADU, we maximize our efforts to innovate and deliver sustainable and inclusive solutions to industry-focused challenges for students, teachers and the wider UAE community. Furthermore, we aim to provide a holistic educational experience and the latest innovative technologies to develop the future skills of our students and prepare a generation of researchers and innovators,” he added.-TradeArabia News Service
