‘Abu Dhabi was a long time ago’: Helmut Marko hits back at Mercedes boss Toto Wolff for accusing Red Bull of exceeding cost cap

[ad_1]

Helmut Marko believes Toto Wolff and Mercedes’ accusations against Red Bull were motivated by the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix final.

Mercedes and Red Bull have always been close rivals. In 2021, however, they’ve taken that competition to a whole new level. Their star drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, battling for the world title, ended up controversially backing the latter on the final lap of the season finale.

The Abu Dhabi incident eventually angered the entire Mercedes team. Red Bull’s chief adviser Helmut Marko believes Wolff hasn’t gotten over it yet. That’s why the 50-year-old is so adamant against damaging Red Bull’s reputation, accusing them of exceeding the cost cap.

This is what has been in the news for the last few days. Two teams have reportedly exceeded the set cost cap, and the media believe Red Bull and Aston Martin are those teams.

Marko has defended the allegations against Red Bull in a recent interview. He also used it as a platform to hit his countryman Wolfe.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner is also unhappy with the direct accusations by Wolff and Mercedes.he lash out A reporter before the Singapore Grand Prix asked him why they were unhappy.

Marko, on the other hand, went on to suggest this was Wolff’s way of hitting back at them during the controversy in Abu Dhabi last December. The 78-year-old took a dig at Mercedes bosses ahead of Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix.

“It’s a huge damage to reputation,” he said in an interview with ORF. “Abu Dhabi is long gone. It’s kind of weird that you haven’t gotten over it yet.”

“How Toto Wolff came up with these numbers is simply amazing. He talked about massive overruns. There must be water impermeability somewhere in the FIA.”

Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher has revealed that Marko was actually talking about Shaila-Ann Rao, a friend of Wolff’s and secretary general of FIA Motorsport.
