change take
Strong government investment, peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and strong collaboration networks have made Abu Dhabi an emerging global AI hub and an increasingly attractive destination for conferences and events catering to the industry.
Abu Dhabi Convention and Exhibition Authority
As the United Arab Emirates (UAE) continues to transition from an oil economy to a knowledge economy, artificial intelligence is becoming It is expected to become one of the national key industries. The World Economic Forum estimates that AI will add nearly $16 trillion to the global economy by 2030.
Abu Dhabi is leading the transformation of the UAE.The country’s capital has a thriving entrepreneurial community, advanced machine learning research facilities and world-class educational institutions such as Khalifa University of Technology (KU) and Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI).
“These institutions help to underpin Abu Dhabi’s world-class AI ecosystem,” said Dr. Ernesto Damiani, Professor and Senior Director of the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at Khalifa University. “The ecosystem is also made up of several large companies investing in developing AI applications in various verticals, from healthcare to energy.”
International professionals and researchers are relocating to Abu Dhabi thanks to the UAE’s Golden Visa programme, which offers top global talent a wide range of visa options for up to 10 years.
Unique Government Partnership
In 2017, the UAE became the first country to appoint AI Minister Omar Sultan Al Olama, who sees AI as a horizontal enabler across multiple industries, including information technology, healthcare, manufacturing, transport, finance and marketing.
“Having a federal minister is what makes the UAE so special,” Damiani said. “The minister oversees the UAE’s Artificial Intelligence Council, which helps the community coordinate research and gather resources. This is something I’ve rarely seen in Europe or the rest of the world. The council encourages collaboration while also promoting competition at a significant level.”
In addition to leading strategic vision, setting priorities, and serving as an advocate for the sector at the federal level, the minister helps foster collaboration and information exchange among various educational institutions and research institutions in the region.
“I’m glad to know that we have a friend and advocate in government,” said Dr. Jorge Manuel Miranda Dias, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at KUCARS. “It makes Abu Dhabi more secure on the international stage.”
AI infrastructure in Abu Dhabi
One of the Council’s greatest priorities is to achieve practical applications of artificial intelligence, an effort supported by Khalifa University, MBZUAI, and the region’s growing cluster of educational and research institutions dedicated to the field.
For example, Khalifa University has been improving its artificial intelligence and robotics capabilities for more than 10 years, and the establishment of KUCARS in 2018 marked a major milestone in its development in this field.
“We have about 80 researchers working on advanced robotics projects, including about 12 faculty members, 30 postdoctoral researchers and 50 graduate students,” said Dr. Lakmal Seneviratne, a professor who helped establish Khalifa University’s robotics unit in 2010. Our lab facilities are second to none, including a new marine robotics pool, a self-driving test lab, and a number of smaller labs focused on industrial robotics, space robotics, computer vision, and drones, to name a few. We even launched a program to enhance food security, applying robotics to greenhouses and indoor farming. “
MBZUAI is partnering with IBM to open a new research facility, the AI Center of Excellence, which will bring together students, faculty, and IBM researchers to develop AI applications to address a range of realities, from healthcare to climate The world’s challenges change. In addition, the university plans to open up a new supercomputing resource that can help students and researchers process the complex algorithms and large datasets needed to produce accurate results and models.
Other agencies include NYU Abu Dhabi Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR), which is exploring how to use artificial intelligence to combat climate change, and Science and Technology Innovation Research Institute (TII), a global research center dedicated to advancing the frontiers of knowledge in various advanced scientific fields, including natural language processing, a key component of the field of artificial intelligence. TII recently launched Noor, the world’s largest Arabic processing model, designed to facilitate the development of tools such as chatbots, language translation and social media sentiment analysis.
Ideal destination for meetings and events
Skift’s megatrends for 2022 Abu Dhabi’s meeting and events strategy reportedly prioritizes the health and safety of residents and travelers, while innovating around infrastructure, technology, cultural and experiential offerings. The city recently announced Conference and Rewards Program 2.0 by Advantage Abu Dhabi Offering a comprehensive value-added and enhanced experience to inspire corporate clients to choose Abu Dhabi as their event, several conferences in the field of artificial intelligence are coming.
MBZUAI and NYU Abu Dhabi co-host 2022 conference in November Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing, the leading conference on natural language processing and artificial intelligence. In October 2024, Khalifa University will host the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, one of the largest robotics research conferences in the world.
Together, these high-level activities provide strong evidence that Abu Dhabi is a true global hub for artificial intelligence. The city has been honored with the 2024 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Circuits and Systems (AICAS), an acclaimed annual event that “promotes state-of-the-art research, innovation, and development at the forefront of artificial intelligence.”
Looking to the future: vision for the future
Abu Dhabi has laid a good foundation for the future development of artificial intelligence. Industry leaders believe the city’s investments in talent development, supporting educational and research-based institutions, and fostering a strong tech business environment will deliver significant returns over the next decade.
Seneviratne is excited about the road ahead: “Looking back 10 years, we could never have imagined how quickly robotics and artificial intelligence would develop in Abu Dhabi. I think the next 10 years will be even more explosive.”
