Team Abu Dhabi’s Rashid Al Mulla is aiming for a fifth consecutive win at the UIM-ABP Aquabike World Championships when he completes the 2022 series at the Sardinian Regional Grand Prix in Italy over the weekend Freestyle champion.
The Emiratis arrived in the coastal city of Olbia to defend a remarkable five-year unbeaten streak, with 13 Grand Prix wins and 28 consecutive moto wins.
Mulla’s dominance of the World Freestyle Series has not been seriously threatened since his maiden Grand Prix title in November 2017, and he remains very active in winning more titles for the Abu Dhabi Ocean Sports Club.
“I want to keep winning and what really motivates me is the Abu Dhabi team and the club,” he said. “I try to introduce new techniques every year, like the double backflip. I spend a lot of time training to be able to reach higher heights.”
Thanks to his recent Grand Prix victory in Spain, Mura has for years been six points ahead of one of his main challengers, Roberto Mariani, while another Italian, Alberto Cameron Alberto Camerlengo is third in the standings by four points.
His Abu Dhabi teammate Emma-Nellie Ortendahl is also planning to finish the season in Italy in order to land an overall podium in the Ski Ladies GP1 series.
The Swede is ready for a strong challenge in Italy and will be looking to recreate the form that has earned her three world titles, as well as last year’s runner-up finish.
Estonia’s Jasmiin Ypraus leads this year’s title race after a hat-trick in Spain’s moto win, with Ortendahl currently sixth in the standings but determined to finish the season in style.
To claim another Runabout GP1 title, Kuwait’s Yousef Al Abdulrazzaq will need to wipe out the 10-point lead held by Denmark’s Marcus Jorgensen.
Defending Spanish ski GP1 world champion Nacho Armillas misses the race after breaking his left foot in a recent training accident.
