Abu Dhabi has released new road speed management guidelines. The guidance details procedures for assessing, reviewing and standardizing vehicle speeds on existing and new roads.

The Abu Dhabi Standing Technical Committee on Technical Standards of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Compliance Council (QCC) issued the guidance to help ensure the highest level of safety on Abu Dhabi’s roads.

They were prepared in collaboration with the Joint Committee on Transport Safety chaired by the Ministry of Municipalities and Transport, the Abu Dhabi Police General Directorate, the Integrated Transport Centre and the Ministry of Health. The group also includes representatives from other affiliated cities.

This is in line with the Joint Commission on Traffic Safety’s Vision Zero strategy aimed at reducing road fatalities to zero. It highlights the need for clear speed management methods and tools that take into account all road users, engineering standards and traffic control needs.

Saif Al Bakri, Director of QCC’s Normative Services Department, said the guidelines aim to improve traffic safety in accordance with best international standards and practices, and inform applicable speeds commensurate with engineering design and road conditions.

The guidance demonstrates the keenness of the Joint Traffic Safety Committee and strategic partners to enhance the safety of road users and continue to reduce road accidents as part of their efforts to build an integrated and sustainable transport system in Abu Dhabi.
