Evenepoel soars to a 59-second overall win at the UAE Tour, setting the world champion on track for greater things trip to italy.
“I didn’t think I was going to win this game. I came here to get a good result, but winning a minute is a lot,” Evenepoel told the media on Sunday. “I’ve been there every day and I’ve been in great form all week. I can only be happy.”
Evenepoel and his Soudal Quick-Step team aim for a slow start to 2023 to salvage the Belgian’s form ahead of May Pink run.
They ditched the winter altitude camp preferred by most top pros in hopes of getting Evenepoel to train hard in the spring.
Instead, the Belgian trained at the Veulta in San Juan and on “home” soil in Spain, while half of the WorldTour’s players took part in thin air in Europe and South America. train.
The bet won.
“There’s no height, no specific work, and I think there’s more room for improvement,” Evenepoel said. “So everything is fine now.”

A narrow gap to “King of Hafeet” Yates on Sunday, which was reported to be the fastest ascent on the line, gave Evenepoel his 11th career GC win.

“I know Adam has been at high altitude almost all winter, so you know he’s going to be flying up the mountain. But in the end, 10 seconds is a very small margin because I haven’t started my specific work yet,” Evenepoel said on Hafeet.
“I think maybe I underestimated myself at the beginning of the week. But it’s just a good sign for the Giro.”
Evenenepoel takes a break before heading to Teide to start training for the Giro d’Italia. A return to action in Volta, Catalonia next month will test his progress.
Evenepoel will be joined by select Quick-Step teammates at the Volcano in Tenerife as management weighs up its Giro d’Italia VIII.
Team staff confirmation Velo News This week it has a shortlist of 12 drivers for the May Tour, which will be condensed throughout the spring.
“I see that the team is good, but we are not yet at the top level. So we have time. We will now go to the high altitudes for the first time and start specific work for the Giro,” confirmed Evenepoel.
The red jersey of the UAE Tour now joins Evenepoel’s extensive leaderwear collection.
But as his second one-week win at the WorldTour level, it could mean a lot more, given what it could mean over the course of his full schedule.
