American democracy threatened in midterm: Joe Biden | World News

[ad_1]

WashingtonU.S. President Joe Biden says the future of American democracy itself is at stake in midterm elections, speaks out against political violence and intimidation, warns against growing attempts to derail the electoral process, and questions whether the outcome is The road to chaos.

Speaking Wednesday night near Union Station next to the U.S. Capitol, Biden blasted Donald Trump’s “big lie” in denying the 2020 election result for fueling a “dangerous rise in political violence and voter intimidation.”

Biden’s comments come days after voters across the United States chose all members of the House of Representatives and 35 senators, in addition to 36 state governors and 30 attorney generals, as well as a slew of other state and local positions. Polls show Republicans poised to take control of the House of Representatives, with both parties vying for control of the Senate.

His remarks were sparked by last week’s attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s California home, where she brutally attacked her still hospitalized husband, Paul Pelosi, 82. Pelosi, third in line to the presidency, is a Democratic veteran who has become a prime target of far-right smears. The presidential speech was also put forward by a series of Republicans on ballots across the country who said they might not accept it if the outcome was not in their favor.

“The attackers entered the home and asked, ‘Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy?’ Departments, wandering the hallways looking for officials, and erecting the gallows to hang the former. Vice President Mike Pence,” Biden said, adding that the “big lie” of the 2020 election’s theft ensnared an angry mob crazy.

Biden upped the ante in the upcoming polls, saying that while the election will have an impact on a range of issues, it is “an inflection point.” “We must vote knowing that not only current policies are at stake, but also the institutions that hold us together as we seek a more perfect coalition. We must vote to know who we were and what we could become what.”

Implying that every generation in America has a mandate to defend and preserve democracy, the president launched a direct attack on Trump, calling him a former president. Biden says democracy is under attack because Trump refuses to accept the will of the people, refuses to accept the fact that he lost the election, abuses his office and casts his ‘big lie’ as what Biden calls a ‘MAGA Republican’ Decisive Features,” using Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again” as a way of distinguishing between the far-right and moderate conservatives within the Republican Party.

“The extreme MAGA element of the Republican Party — as I said before, it is a minority in the party, but its driving force — is trying to succeed where they have failed in 2020 to suppress voter rights and subvert The electoral system itself,” Biden claimed, noting that there were 300 “election deniers” (a term used for those who still deny the legitimacy of the 2020 election) on the ballot for this election.

“Make no mistake. Democracy is on all of our votes,” Biden said, defining key values that hold Americans together even in the darkest of times. “First, we believe that the American vote is sacred…Second, we must speak out against political violence and intimidation of voters…Third, we believe in democracy.”

Biden warned that not accepting the election results was a path toward chaos that was unprecedented and “un-American,” and urged voters to consider one simple question before voting.

“I want you to ask a simple question to every candidate you might vote for: Will that person accept the legitimate will of the American people and the person who voted in his or her district? That person will accept the outcome of the election, yes Win or lose? The answer to that question is crucial. In my opinion, it should be decisive,” the president said, adding that the question was about the future of American democracy.
