Amid record-breaking new crown pneumonia cases, Melbourne prepares for more protests | Coronavirus pandemic news

After being identified as a potential target for an Australian city, the vaccination center was told to be on high alert or ordered to close temporarily.

As Victoria’s COVID-19 cases set a daily record, the police in Australia’s second largest city, Melbourne, are preparing to conduct a fourth day of anti-blockade protests after arresting more than 200 people a day ago.

According to the “Herald Sun” report, after being identified as a potential target by the protesters, the vaccination center was told on Thursday that it was on high alert, and the protesters were also angry about the state’s vaccination regulations.

According to the “Times” report, due to threats from protesters, some vaccination centers have been ordered to close until next Monday.

At a press conference on Thursday, Victoria Governor Daniel Andrews praised the police’s handling of the protesters the day before.

Since officials earlier this week ordered the closure of construction sites for two weeks and forced construction workers to be vaccinated to limit the spread of the virus, hundreds of people have taken to the streets of this city of 5 million people.

On Wednesday, the police used pepper spray and foam truncheons to disperse protesters gathered in front of the memorial war memorial, prompting veterans groups and some politicians to publicly oppose the site as a rallying point.

“This shames those Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice, and I hope that all those involved in this shameful act should be ashamed,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Thursday in Washington, DC where he is visiting.

As the authorities prepare for more protests, Victoria reported 766 new local infections, surpassing the daily high of 725 cases of the pandemic on August 5 last year. It also reported that four more people died from the coronavirus.

According to the “Sydney Morning Herald”, in neighboring New South Wales (NSW), at least 1,063 cases were reported on Thursday and another 6 people died. A hospital in North Sydney also reported a new COVID-19 cluster.

With the continued increase in cases, New South Wales Health Minister Brad Hazzard stated that the state has “done very well” in vaccination.

The proportion of people aged 16 and over who received the first dose of vaccine has reached 83.6%, of which 55.5% have been fully vaccinated.

“This is very remarkable, and I want to thank everyone who went out, contributed to the community and themselves and vaccinated,” Hazzard told the newspaper.

Approximately 45% of people in Victoria have been vaccinated.

Australia is fighting the third wave of infections from the delta virus outbreak in Sydney and Melbourne and the capital Canberra, forcing nearly half of the country’s 25 million people to face strict home restrictions.

Officials promised that once 70% of adults are fully vaccinated, the lockdown regulations will be relaxed, which is expected next month.

Since the first delta case was discovered in Sydney in mid-June, approximately 60,000 cases have been recorded. The total death toll is slightly less than 1,200, but still lower than in many other wealthy countries.
