LOS ANGELES (AP) — Anne Heche was still on a ventilator to help her breathe and underwent surgery Tuesday, four days after she was injured in a violent car crash.
“Shortly after the accident, Anne was unconscious, in a coma and in critical condition,” spokeswoman Heather Duffy Boylston said in an email. “She had severe lung damage that required mechanical ventilation and burns that required surgical intervention.”
Lung means related to the lungs. Heche’s friend and podcast partner Duffy Boylston did not provide further details.
On August 5, Heche’s car crashed into a house in the Mar Vista area of West Los Angeles. The fire broke out, and Heche, who was alone in the car, was pulled from the vehicle embedded in the house by firefighters. The Los Angeles Fire Department said it took nearly 60 firefighters more than an hour to put out the blaze.
Ohio-born Hetch made her debut on the NBC soap “Another World” from 1987 to 1991, for which she won a Daytime Emmy.
Her film career took off in the late 1990s, starring alongside Hedge against stars including Johnny Depp (“Donnie Blasco”) and Harrison Ford (“Six Days, Seven Nights”).
In her 2001 memoir, “Call Me Crazy,” Heche talked about her lifelong struggles with mental health and abusive childhood.
From 2001 to 2009, she was married to photographer Coleman Laffoon. The two have a son. During her relationship with actor James Tupper, she had another son, who co-starred in her TV series The Man in the Tree.
For the past two decades, Heche has worked in small films, Broadway and TV shows. She recently had recurring roles on the web series “Chicago Police Department” and “All Rise,” and in 2020 was a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars.”
