Applications for the 2022 Christo and Jeanne Crowder Prize are now open to UAE artists

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) have announced the opening of applications for the 2022 Christo and Jeanne Crowder Awards , Welcome to submit until January 31, 2022.

Produced annually since 2013, and this New York University Art GalleryThe 10th Christo and Jeanne-Crowder Prize is a launching pad for artists from all over the UAE, encouraging new works of art and giving the winners an in-depth understanding of the professional life as an artist, from commission to exhibition. The program is open to UAE students and recent graduates.

Participants can choose any media they wish to use. This includes but is not limited to photography, sculpture, installation, land art and video. They are also encouraged to think creatively about how to display their work in a public environment.

This year’s award-winning artist or team will receive US$10,000 to complete their installation. In the true spirit of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work, the winning works will be publicly exhibited and appreciated in Abu Dhabi in November 2022.

Internationally renowned artist Christo, his wife and artistic partner Jeanne-Claude have had a 40-year relationship with the UAE. Christo wanted to support emerging artists in the UAE, so in 2012 he set up an award in his name. Jeanne Crowder died in November 2009, and Christo died in 2020.

Commenting on the tenth edition, Maya Allison, Executive Director of the New York University Art Museum and Chief Curator of the University, said: “Every year this award will trigger meaningful new growth in the creative community of the UAE, because artists and Many necessary people worked together and brought an important public artwork into existence. The art unveiling trip showed me that Christo’s vision truly came to life. New York University is honored to be able to help achieve this goal.”

Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award Director Emily Doherty added: “Today, we are celebrating the decade of this groundbreaking art award: this project is inspired by Christo’s close relationship with the UAE and has been providing a public platform for emerging artists. . In our tenth year of receiving the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Awards, we pay tribute to our award-winning alumni—especially those alumni who have posed such a huge challenge to them during the pandemic—and Looking forward to receiving new art proposals in 2022.”

Christo and Jeanne-Claude have created acclaimed works of art around the world, and changed the concept of “public art” by creating temporary design works. It is also planned to realize the couple’s decades-long dream of building a “Mastaba” structure made of 410,000 colored steel barrels in the Liwa Desert.

Past selection committee members include HE Huda Al Khamis-Kanoo, former New York University Provost Fabio Piano, Abu Dhabi Art Director Dyala Nusseibeh, artist Azza Al Qubaisi, and guest juror Kevin Jones.
