Dr Timothy Witham, the world’s first surgeon to perform spine surgery using augmented reality (AR) on a head-mounted display, will be participating in the upcoming Arab Health Future Health Summit in Dubai.
Arab Health 2023 will be held at the Dubai World Trade Center in Dubai from 30 January to 2 February 2023.
Dr. Witham, professor of neurosurgery and plastic surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will lead a discussion on the opportunities and benefits of alternative reality for the healthcare industry, outlining what can be used to make surgery safer and more effective The tools are effective, faster and more efficient.
“The definition of AR is when you take a computer-generated image and superimpose that image on top of your view of the real world. In AR, unlike virtual reality (VR), where you interact with the virtual World interaction, we interact with the real world, but we have additional computer-generated images that are simultaneously used to project digital information onto the existing environment,” Dr Witham said.
“In 2020, we performed the first augmented reality spine surgery using a head-mounted display. We had CT scans in the field of view while the patient was being operated on and observed.
“I’ve performed over 150 surgeries using AR since then, and I can say it’s at least as good as robotics, while also making a difference in minimizing the need for repeat surgeries due to misalignment of spinal implants. Huge advance. This could also be the first step in using AR for all surgeries,” he added.
As part of the summit, discussions will focus on the Metaverse and its opportunity to impact healthcare by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), VR and AR to improve patient outcomes.
“Preventive medicine will take on new meaning thanks to new technologies in healthcare. Blood analysis will become so advanced that it will map your entire genetic makeup.
