Speaking of Aretha’s name change, U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence, a state Democrat, long-time postal worker, and close friend of the Queen of Soul, initially proposed legislation leading to the name change to Congress, she said : “Her inheritance is always in her music, in her family. But we added a post office to her inheritance list with her name written on it.”
The bill was signed in January, and after being approved, US Senator Gary Peters stated:
