ASO Offers Free Concert of Songs by Black Composers

Singers Sarah Dailey and Nisheedah Golden join pair of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and conductor Geoffrey Robson Free “Neighborhood Concert” Featuring Works by Black Composers:

Dailey will perform five Milley songs from H. Leslie Adams excerpt “https://www.nwaonline.com/news/2023/apr/09/aso-offers-free-concerts-of-black-composers-songs/” . Golden will perform two songs by Little Rock native Florence Price: “Hold on to the Dream” and “My Soul Is Anchor in the Lord.” The orchestra will perform Price’s “Octet for Brass and Piano,” George Walker’s “String Lyric Ballad,” Jessie Montgomery’s “Strum,” and William Grant Still’s “Out of the Silence.”

Art and Exhibition: “Voice and Vote”

Arkansas Humanities Council is working with Smithsonian Institution, Main Street Museum and Arkansas Host Site to bring traveling exhibit “Voice and Vote: Democracy in America” to Arkansas.

The traveling exhibit is adapted from a larger exhibit currently on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and includes historical and contemporary photographs, historical artifacts (including campaign and voter memorabilia), protest material, educational and archival videos, and interactive multimedia components.

It will begin its journey across the state on Saturday, May 26-26 at the State Capitol in Little Rock.

apple blossom

“Apple Blossom Parade”, Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Rogers’ first Apple Blossom Festival in 1923, it’s on display Saturday at the Rogers Historical Museum, 313 Second Street, Rogers. It will run until October 28th. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Free admission. Call (479) 621-1154.

Exhibits include original holiday costumes and other holiday-related items from the museum’s collection, photos of elaborately decorated parade floats, recreations of downtown Rogers window displays, a replica of the Apple Blossom Queen throne (where visitors can sit for pictures), and Arkansas Recordings by festival music students of the Academy of Arts.

The museum will also reinvent the holiday tradition by sponsoring a window dressing contest in the downtown business district; online voting through the museum website, rogershistoricalmuseum.org/window-contestWill be open Saturday to April 30th. The winner of the People’s Choice Vote will be announced on the museum’s social media accounts on May 1 and will be rewarded with a $500 Visa gift card.

Fort Smith Exhibit

Opening reception on Friday from 5-7pm to introduce three new exhibits Fort Smith Regional Art Museum, 1601 Rogers Avenue, Fort Smith:

◼️ “Museum Projects”, in the permanent collection of the Sandi and Sandy Sanders Galleries, presents examples of fine art photography curated and donated to select museums around the world, photographer and professor Robert von Stern Berg mobilized a group of artists to work in 2012. The Fort Smith exhibition includes 23 works in photographic media and digital imagery by six artists – Barry Anderson, Darryl Curran, Sheila Pinker, Bonnie Schiffman, Michael Stone and Nancy Weber.

◼️ Elizabeth Weber’s sculpture art exhibition “Exploring the Inner Forest” at Marta Jones Gallery.

◼️ A solo exhibition at the student gallery by Ayree Maner, a sophomore at Greenwood High School. She mainly uses acrylics and watercolors, and has recently started using oils. The sponsor is the Arvest Foundation.

Movie: “King’s return”

extended version of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Winner of 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Peter Jackson), returns to theaters for its 20th anniversary:

ETC.: Pulitzer Prize Winning Poet

Hendricks Murphy Visiting Poet and Pulitzer Prize Winner Sharon Olds Her work will be read and discussed Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Staples Auditorium at Hendricks College, 1600 Washington Blvd., Conway. Books will be sold at Mills Lobby after reading, and WordsWorth Books in Little Rock will sell select titles of Olds’ work.

Olds is the author of 13 volumes of poetry; her collection “The Stag Leaps” won the TS Eliot Prize and the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.
