James Cameron’s visual spectacle Avatar: The Way of Water is breaking box office records in India. After grossing Rs 1,927.5 crore in its first week, the film managed to hold its own at the box office even in its second week. While the second weekend brought in a massive Rs 593 crore, beating Avengers: Endgame’s record of Rs 525.5 crore, second Monday saw good cinema footfall as well.
On its second Monday, Avatar 2’s revenue was in line with its second Friday. According to Box Office India, it earned around Rs 12-13 crore. With numbers like that, the film could end its second week in theaters with another $1 billion. The film is also doing well in the southern states and may cross the Rs 100 crore mark in Telugu soon. According to the Indian Box Office report, India is the fourth largest market for Avatar 2 after China, South Korea and France.
Globally, Avatar: Way of Water is already the fifth highest-grossing film of 2022. It has grossed $889 million — second only to “Black Panther: Forever Wakanda” and “Batman.” In India, the film has become the third biggest grosser after KGF Chapter 2 (Rs 43.47 crore) and RRR (Rs 274.31 crore).
One of the reasons “Avatar 2” did well in theaters is that there is no local competition. Rohit Shetty’s comedy “Cirkus” was supposed to be a strong contender, but it failed to attract viewers. After a poor weekend at the box office (Rs 2.085 crore), the film underperformed on Monday, earning around Rs 30 lakh, according to Box Office India. This is more than 50% lower than the film’s Sunday box office receipts (Rs 820 crore). Not just Avatar 2, Drishyam 2 by Ajay Devgn Also benefited from the failure of Cirkus. In its sixth week, the movie is still in theaters. Its total collection currently stands at Rs. 227.94 crore.
Avatar: The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet. Sam and Zoe reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri in Avatar 2.
