Authorities warned residents not to attempt to cross the valley as downpours could cause vehicles to drift
The UAE Ministry of Interior (MoI) and other authorities have advised residents to take care while driving on Wednesday as heavy to moderate rain hit the four emirates. Rainy and dusty conditions will continue until at least 11.30pm tonight, according to the latest news from the National Center of Meteorology (NCM).
In the alert, the Home Office warned of “fluctuating weather conditions”, with heavy rain causing low visibility and high-speed winds kicking up dust.
“Avoid valleys and places with currents,” the ministry advises. Heavy rains often cause valleys to flood as water gushes up the mountains.
The NCM urges motorists to refrain from driving unless absolutely necessary.
Authorities in Ras Al Khaimah warned that attempting to cross the valley during heavy rain could cause vehicles to drift, causing accidents.
Residents have also been told to avoid beaches and seaside.
According to NCM, parts of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, Al Zayed, Khor Fakkan and Fujairah in Sharjah received heavy to moderate rain this morning.
The UAE Storm Center released this video from Fujairah:
There will be rainfall of varying intensities across the country today, accompanied by thunder and lightning. A video posted by the center of the storm captured the lightning from Ras Al Khaimah:
The unsettled weather will continue tomorrow with a “significant drop” in temperatures. Coastal, northern and eastern regions will also see some rain on Friday and Saturday.
The Ministry of the Interior and the National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Agency (NCEMA) had earlier declared that the country was ready “to deal with any emergency situation that may arise due to the current weather conditions and their fluctuations”.
Residents were told to follow official weather forecasts and follow directions issued by authorities.
