Bangladesh’s Meghla wins first prize at UAE student art fair

Bangladeshi artist Jannatul Fardous Meghla wins first prize at the first annual student art exhibition in Dubai, UAE.

Organised by De Montfort University-based Emirati arts group Funun Arts, 320 student artists from 60 countries participated in ASAS from 4 to 6 November, focusing on 16 Sustainable Development Goals.

Artist Meghla won first prize in the third category for her painting “Providing Clean Water” for SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Architecture at North South University.

In addition, another Bengali calligraphy artist, Shamsunnahar Tasnim, a grade 10 student at Jannatul Banat Madrasha in Dhaka, won the award for her Arabic calligraphy on SDG 3: good health and well-being.

The event was opened by Suhail Mohd Al Zarooni, entrepreneur and Chairman of the Al Zarooni Foundation (also a renowned Emirati collector and Guinness World Record holder) and renowned Emirati artist Ahmad Al Awadhi Rukni.

The founders of Funun Arts Shiba Khan and Farah Khan launched this major student art exhibition, the inaugural edition of which welcomed 26 self-taught artists from Bangladesh through Mahfuz Canvas under the direction of artist Mahfuzur R​​​hman.

Mahfuzur received both awards at De Montfort University in Dubai on behalf of Bangladeshi artists.

He said his platform Mahfuz Canvas is trying to provide a global platform for self-taught artists in Bangladesh, who are in a relatively disadvantaged position.

“We are delighted and proud of this initiative and continue our efforts to provide an international platform for these artists. Mahfuz Canvas will be arranging another show by 50 Bangladeshi artists at the Dubai International Arts Centre in Jumeirah, Dubai from December 12 to 19. Group exhibition of self-taught artists.

Mahfuz told UNB that the exhibition will mark Bangladesh’s 51st Victory Day.
