Beijing says Sino-Russian relations ‘on track’ | World News

[ad_1]

China is willing to work with Russia to shape the international order in a “more just and reasonable direction,” a senior Chinese diplomat said as the two leaders prepared to meet this week.

China and Russia, former Cold War allies, have strained relations that have drawn them closer in recent years as part of what they call an “unrestricted” relationship aimed at counterbalancing U.S. global dominance.

“Under the strategic leadership of President Xi Jinping and President Putin, relations between the two countries have always been moving forward on the right track,” Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told Russia’s ambassador to China Andrei Denisov on Monday, according to a foreign ministry reading.

Yang Jiechi said that China is “willing to work with Russia to continue to implement the spirit of high-level strategic cooperation between the two countries, safeguard the common interests of both sides, and promote the development of the international order in a more just and reasonable direction,” according to the ministry.

In his response, Denisov praised the “great results” of the bilateral relationship, the statement said.

Russia has sought to strengthen ties with Asian countries, especially China, since it was hit with unprecedented Western sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine.

Tensions between China and the West have risen, with Beijing not condemning Moscow’s intervention in Ukraine and offering diplomatic cover by bashing Western sanctions and arms sales to Kyiv.

Putin and Xi will meet this week on the sidelines of a summit of regional states in Uzbekistan.

Last week, Beijing’s top legislator, Li Zhanshu, became the highest-ranking Communist Party politician to travel to Russia since the Ukrainian invasion.

During his visit, Li Keqiang praised the “unprecedented level” of trust and cooperation between Moscow and Beijing.
