Jannik Sinner claimed his first title of the season with a 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 victory over Maxime Cressy at the French Open.
Cressy beat top seed Holger Rune in the semi-finals but was unable to repeat the same performance against Sinner, who would move up to No. 14 in the ATP Rankings.
Sinner, the first Italian winner in the tournament’s history, failed to win a match in his two previous stints in Montpellier.
He has now amassed seven Tour-level titles, six of them on hard courts.
“Honestly, the first key was to hold serve. In the tie-break, I knew he might miss something,” said Sinner, who saved all three break points he gave his American opponent.
“I tried to hold my serve and I did, so I’m very happy with the first set.
“The second set was a bit different. I had a couple of good chances, but he served well.
“I’m glad I broke him here, and then I served well at the end of the game.”
Sinner, who made two early mini-breaks in the first-set tie-break to take a 4-0 lead, mustered the nerve to win the set when he first asked.
The key break of the second game came in the eighth game, when Cressy’s weak volley went into the net, and Sinner sealed the victory.
