President Joe Biden voted Saturday in the U.S. midterm elections ahead of an election that could cost his Democrats their congressional majority.
Biden, with the help of his granddaughter Natalie, voted in his eastern Delaware hometown of Wilmington for the first time.
Wearing his signature aviator sunglasses and a navy blue jacket, the president left the polling place with an “I Vote” sticker on his lapel.
Biden’s vote comes just days after the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was attacked at his California home.
The president has criticized the country’s heated political climate, which he claims has been made worse by false allegations by former President Donald Trump and his supporters that the recent election was rigged.
“It’s one thing to condemn violence,” Biden told reporters. “But you can’t condemn violence unless you condemn those who continue to think the election was untrue and that the election was stolen.”
If nothing else, the November vote appears to be in line with a historical trend of midterm elections against the ruling party.
Many Americans have voted early, either in person at a polling place or by mail.
