No more blues at breweries as license passes allow for live entertainment

After delays allowing New Realm Brewing Co. to address buffering and noise-related issues, it received unanimous approval from the City Council to offer live entertainment at its new location in North Suffolk’s Harbour View area once it opens. .

The location, located at 5941 Harbour View Blvd., will be New Realm Brewing’s fifth location, including one in Virginia Beach.

Council members were divided on whether to approve a conditional license for live entertainment at their July 20 meeting, before a 7-1 vote to put the matter on hold for 30 days.

However, during that time, project developer Blue Point Investment Group met with the Harbor View Homeowners Association and proposed a 30-foot-wide buffer zone with single rows of evergreen shrubs and double staggered evergreen trees, 6-foot-tall. Aluminum fence.

Its previous proposals included a privacy fence of at least 6 feet high and a 30-foot wide screen of evergreen shrubs that would be placed at the rear of the property near the residential complex.

Since the council’s July meeting, Blue Point has also had engineers put on a sound exhibit outlining how loud live entertainment can get. Testing has shown it reaches 70 decibels at the source, drops to 40 decibels at about 110 feet from the source, 34 decibels at about 210 feet from the edge of its parking lot, and 28 decibels at the closest point at 420 feet Kevin Wayne, interim director of Residential Structures, Planning and Community Development at New Field Music Source, said it was akin to a whisper.

Mayor Mike Duman announced the $9 million New Realm brewery project in a city address in May. The proposal is part of Blue Point Riverfront, an 18-acre mixed-use development along Harbour View Drive. The same property also has plans to build an $11 million Stay Suites hotel, but is not covered by the permit application.

The New Realm plans to have live entertainment outdoors, unless in inclement weather it will move indoors. Suggested hours for live music are 11am-8pm Sunday, 11am-9pm Monday-Thursday, and 11am-10pm Friday and Saturday. New Realm’s typical hours of operation are extended by one hour after the live entertainment.

Outdoor speakers are also proposed to face the beer garden inwards and keep the sound low. It is not recommended to play music in the rooftop dining area. The beer garden will have covered areas for tables, chairs, fire pits, outdoor tasting service and water features, and is planned to be dog friendly. Beer will also be brewed on-site in the restaurant and tasting room, and project developers say the entertainment will be family-friendly with no nightclub vibe.

Councillor Roger Fawcett read a letter from HOA president Andy Sweet before moving the approval motion, in which Fawcett said Sweet had met with Harbour View residents “now there’s no problem, they want the CUP to be approved by council (Wednesday).”
