Britain will send 600 soldiers to Kabul to evacuate British nationals and embassy staff-News

[ad_1]

The military deployment will provide protection and logistical support.

The British government said on Thursday that it would send 600 soldiers to Afghanistan to help British embassy staff leave the country after the United States announced a similar deployment because the Taliban made rapid progress.

Secretary of Defense Ben Wallace said: “I have authorized the deployment of more military personnel to support the diplomatic presence in Kabul, assist British nationals to leave the country, and support the relocation of former Afghan staff who risked their lives to serve with us. .”

“The safety of British nationals, British soldiers and former Afghan staff is our top priority. We must do everything we can to ensure their safety,” he added.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) stated that military personnel will be deployed to Afghanistan in a “short-term” due to “the increase in violence in the country and the rapid deterioration of the security environment.”

It added that the staff of the British Embassy in Kabul has been reduced to a small team focused on providing consular and visa services for those who need to leave the country quickly.

The British Foreign Office changed its travel advice last Friday, advising all British nationals to leave Afghanistan “as soon as possible.”

According to the Ministry of Defence, the military deployment will provide “force protection and logistical support” for the resettlement of the remaining British nationals.

The army will also help the British government speed up the resettlement plan of Afghans who have supported British military personnel in Afghanistan over the past two decades.

“This will help ensure that interpreters and other Afghan staff who risk their lives in Afghanistan to work with the British army can move to the UK as soon as possible,” the Ministry of Defense said.
