Prosecutors have charged a Northern California man with fatally shooting three men who police say were among six victims killed by the serial killer.
Wesley Brownlee, 43, was arrested Saturday on suspicion of killing six men and wounding a woman in a series of shootings dating back to April 2021.
Police had been watching him as he drove through the streets of Stockton, armed with a pistol, possibly “out hunting” another victim.
The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday filed three counts of murder, one count of felony possession of a firearm and one count of possession of ammunition.
Brownlee is currently only charged in three recent killings in Stockton. It is unclear whether prosecutors plan to bring additional charges in other cases.
It is unclear whether Brownlee has an attorney who can comment on his behalf. He was jailed without bail.
Authorities had previously described the suspect (now identified as Brownlee) as a serial killer who was “on a mission” but there appeared to be no clear motive to target his crimes. Investigators said ballistic testing and video evidence were linked to the shooting.
The five men killed in Stockton this year were Paul Yo, 35, who died on July 8; Salvador Debudey Jnr, 43, who died on August 11; Jonathan Hernandez Rowe Driggs, 21, died Aug. 30; Juan Cruz, 52, died Sept. 21; and Lawrence Lopez Snr, 54, died Sept. 27.
Juan Vasquez Serrano, 39, was killed in Oakland on April 10, 2021, and Natasha Latour, 46, was shot but survived in Stockton on April 16 of that year in difficulty.
The criminal complaint filed Tuesday listed only the killings of Rodriguez, Cruz and Lopez.
According to the East Bay Times, Brownlee has a criminal record — including traffic and drug convictions — dating back to his arrest when he was 15.
He was last paroled in 2006.
