Can you share critical milestones and turning points as an industry leader or entrepreneur?

Participated with my dogs in the annual Royal Equestrian shows from 2010 for 10 years.

Working with the Royal Oman Police K9 unit and local military establishments with K9 units for training handlers in various disciplines, introducing behavior training and different methods and fields. Supplying military working dogs and certifying handlers and trainers.

They have been working with the Royal Guard since 2011 to establish their K9 unit.

Being certified by the government in Oman as an official vocational training institute specializing in dog handler training. Initiated the first annual dog event in Oman, Canines for a Cause, in 2015, where all proceeds go towards local charities and animal rescue.

The opening of the first pet resort in Oman. I dreamed of building a luxury resort for dogs and designing plans for a unique alternative in 2015. This dream was realized in 2021 when we opened Jebel K9 Pet Resort. Our luxury resort is uniquely designed with wings for different sizes, personalities, and energies of dogs, an in-house veterinary clinic, grooming spa, training, play areas, a pool, and an in-house pet store which we also offer an e-shop for online shopping and home delivery.

What inspired you to start your own company or venture in this industry?

Growing up with dogs, I have always loved animals, especially dogs. Besides being excellent companions, I was intrigued by how they think, learn, and communicate. It became a passion, and I became certified in dog training, grooming and care, behavior, nutrition, and kennel management. I initially formed Canadian Jebel K9 as a dog training institute and started our first pet boarding facility in 2010 when we identified a growing need for pet boarding in Oman.

How do you foster innovation within your company? Can you provide an example of a successful innovation initiative?

Alfa Vold

I look for characteristics of members to join our team that love dogs. I love training people as much as I love training dogs and doing workshops and courses to certify our handlers in training and handling skills. Encourage our team to share their ideas with regular seminars and brainstorming sessions to discuss and improve the overall experience for our furry guests. We invest in continuous learning by keeping the team updated on new techniques and training and cross-functional training where team members can learn from each other and grow.

How do you attract and retain top talent in your organization?

Training and growing together as a team and empowering people in their strengths. Fulfilling our customer promise as a team through prioritizing our company culture and brand standards.

How vital have mentorship and networking been in your professional journey?

I love sharing my passion for dogs and training with others and have mentored many young people who came to work with me for a time and went on to open their own businesses in dog training and care. We also work with many schools in job shadowing programs, and I regularly bring dogs to schools to educate about dogs and to work with children in reading programs where they can read to the dogs.

We have established a network of international specialized trainers and entities and are members of international organizations for pet trainers, dog behavior, and military working dogs.

How do you assess and mitigate risks in your business?

We have clear SOPs and brand standards that our team is fully conversant with, and we follow market trends to remain current in what we offer for our products and services.

How do you adapt your business strategy to capitalize on emerging opportunities and industry shifts?

We keep abreast of international trends and products and attend regular workshops on new training concepts. Attend international specialized trade shows in pet products, care, and nutrition.

What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs in this industry? What key lessons have you learned along the way?

Alfa Vold

This industry should always be looked at as something other than a job. Working with dogs is a passion and a lifestyle. I advise people interested in this industry to research and educate themselves with established institutions in their discipline. I suggest apprenticing with companies in their field and overall understanding before venturing into their businesses.

Key lessons include learning how to turn challenges into opportunities, stay up to date on trends and never stop gaining more knowledge. Knowing your market and your unique selling points.

What are your long-term goals for your company? How do you plan to remain competitive in the evolving business landscape?

Long-term goals to grow and build our presence in the pet care industry regionally and internationally. Our competitive edge revolves around customer service by building long-term customer relationships. Being responsive to the evolving pet owner needs and providing solutions.
