Cancer Survivor Brings Fun to Fight Against Cancer in Philadelphia

[ad_1]

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Fight cancer this weekend at Abramson Cancer Center’s Fight Against Cancer Philadelphia event.

“I’m so excited. I’m so rooting for them,” said Jesse Kyle, who is getting ready to sing for Philadelphia’s Fight Against Cancer.

For her, it’s personal. Penn is what saved her life.

“I’m a three-time Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor,” Kyle said.

Her cancer ordeal began at 16 and included several rounds of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. But the life-saving treatment caused complications.

“I had radiation therapy in high school, and unfortunately, it hurt my heart,” Kyle said. “I’ve had a heart attack. I’m on dialysis [and] I need a kidney transplant. “

However, the 50-year-old singer was quick to provide important background information.

“For anyone who has been diagnosed recently, please get treatment,” she said. “The problems I’m having now stem from the treatment I had in 1989 — something they don’t do today.”

New and better cancer treatments are the focus of Philadelphia’s anti-cancer campaign. The annual event helped fund studies that led to 12 FDA approvals, changing the face of cancer treatment.

“Abramson Cancer Center is at the forefront of clinical research and funding,” Kyle said. “We’re just leading the country and it’s so exciting to be a part of it.”

Kyle said she is lucky to be able to use her voice to give back to the community.

“Singing. It’s a joy, it’s my first love. I’ve been singing since I was a kid and it’s a blessing,” Kyle said.

It’s a show to help fight cancer with tons of entertainment.

“I practice in the shower because it’s true, you do sound better in the shower,” says Kyle.

Her soulful music resonates through 30 years of medical complications and comes with plenty of positivity.

“I’m not rich or famous, but I’m happy,” she said.

CBS News Philadelphia has learned that a kidney donor has been identified for Kyle.
