Carly Simon lost her two sisters to cancer this week.
The 78-year-old singer grieves the death of Broadway composer Lucy Simon after battling breast cancer, a day after former opera singer Joanna Simon lost her battle with thyroid cancer.
Two deaths – Lucy, 82 and Joanna, 85 – have been confirmed by sources close to Carly, although she has not commented publicly on the losses.
Carly, Lucy and Joanna were born in New York to Richard L. Simon, founder of Simon Schuster Publishing, and his wife Andrea, a civil rights activist and singer.
In the early 1960s, Lucy and Carly formed their own ballad duo called the Simon Sisters.
Although they both went on to pursue solo careers, Lucy later found success as a composer for the Broadway musical “Secret Garden” in 1991, for which she was nominated for a Tony Award.
She went on to write music for the stage adaptations of Doctor Zhivago and the HBO film The True Adventures of the Accused Texas Cheerleader Murdering Mom.
Before her condition worsened, she had been working on Cedar Street, a musical based on the 2015 novel Soul of the Night.
In 1962, Joanna made her New York City Opera debut as Mozart’s Cherubino and performed with the New York Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic and Pittsburgh Symphony.
She went on to work as an arts reporter for PBS’ “MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour” until 1992, later working in real estate.
Lucy and Joanna’s brother photographer Peter Simon died of cardiac arrest in 2018 at the age of 71 after undergoing cancer treatment.
