Air travellers flying from Kerala to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are now forced to pay twice the existing fare in the opposite direction. According to the latest fares, while a UAE-Kerala ticket costs around Rs 6,000, passengers will need to pay at least Rs 13,900 to fly to the Gulf state from any airport in the state.
For example, Air India Express and SpiceJet’s Kochi-Dubai trip costs Rs 13,900 one way; Indigo, Rs 14,900; Air Arabia, Rs 15,500 and Emirates, Rs 16,900. In other words, a family of four would have to spend a fortune flying to the UAE.

According to travel experts, even during the current low season, as the UAE eases visa rules as well as COVID-19 regulations, there is a high demand for air tickets. The Gulf state has recently simplified visa rules and started offering long-term visas for investors, artists and students with excellent academic records. People from Kerala also travel to the UAE to spend time with family and friends. Affordable hotel rooms and shorter travel times are other attractions.
Another reason for the rush is the return of the families of non-resident Indians who have been held in India for more than two years due to the global pandemic. In addition, a large number of people now travel abroad for various purposes such as tourism, business, job hunting, self-employment and study.
The pleasant weather in the UAE between October and February is another reason that attracts tourists to the country.

Travel experts say airfare to the UAE has risen due to a lack of sufficient services to meet demand. Meanwhile, airline officials said there was no need to lower fares amid high demand for tickets.

All airlines have slashed airfares from the UAE to Kerala to lure passengers after a sharp drop in demand. Some of them also increased the luggage allowance to 40kg. Some airlines are now offering as low as AED 269 (Rs 6,080) one-way, compared to AED 2,000-4,000 (Rs 45,210-90,420) this season.

Flights from Dubai or Sharjah to Kozhikode and from Dubai to Kochi are only AED 300 (Rs 6,781). The baggage allowance for economy class is 40kg and the baggage allowance for business class is 50kg. Those who book tickets now can travel at this fare until November 30.

You can fly from Dubai to Kozhikode for AED 269 and to Koze for AED 380. There are 7 flights per week to Kochi and 13 flights to Kozhikode.

All of the above are Air India. Overseas operators have also cut fares, but not as much as their Indian counterparts. For example, the cheapest fare from Dubai to Kochi is AED 620 for flydubai and Air Arabia. These airlines allow luggage up to 25kg.
Mumbai-Dubai is the most popular route
Meanwhile, the Mumbai-Dubai route won the title of the eighth most popular international route. Airline data firm OAG said 1.97 million passengers flew on the route in the past year.
Before COVID-19 hit, the most popular route in the world was Kuala Lumpur-Singapore. However, it is now in fifth place.
Currently, the first position is held by Cairo-Jeddah.
