Christian Bale looked to Columbo for his role in Amsterdam.
The 48-year-old actor, who plays a one-eyed veteran-turned-doctor in David O. Russell’s upcoming Murder Mystery, admits he “studied” Peter Falk’s role as the titular character on the long-running detective series. Perform for inspiration.
When asked if he was inspired by Columbus, he explained: “Absolutely. Yes. Yes. His manner! I’ve definitely studied him.”
Christian and David, who spent five years carefully planning the story over breakfasts in various restaurants, explained that the Oscar-winning star’s orders varied widely depending on the other films he was working on at any one time.
Christian told Deadline: “I went from drinking a lot of coffee to about 16 eggs and three bowls of rice. We did take pictures of me and Dave during breakfast and I gotta tell you, wow baby .”
David added: “That’s Christian. I had a lot of other projects that came and went when we were done with the film, and I thought this was the one I wanted to do.”
The “Wrestler” actor thought the two’s discussions provided enough fodder for more than one film, but thought it was “beautiful” how David shaped them into the final film.
He said: “Well, I’ll do at least two movies, maybe three that we’ve come up with from the beginning. Sometimes I’ll be in town for months on end, we’ll meet regularly, and then…”
David chimed in: “Sometimes two or three times a week.”
Christian continued: “Then I’d go home for a while and when I left I have to say he did his best job. I’m back and he’ll take longer. No. David has him His own way. Like, the moons of all these thoughts are pouring out of him. We’ll talk about them and I’ll leave and come back and see what he’s done with these. I’ll forget, but he won’t forget anything, And it’s great to see it all come together.”
