City of Pelham to widen road outside Oak Hill Amphitheater for new entertainment district; no further comment on Live Nation’s pending move

[ad_1]

Pelham City Council has opted to approve a road widening project on Amphitheater Road leading to the Oak Hill Amphitheatre, although Live Nation’s plans to manage a new amphitheater in North Birmingham appear to be on the verge of realization.

proposed new theater It will be owned by the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center (BJCC) and managed by Live Nation. It will be slightly smaller than Pelham’s 10,500 seats, with only 8,900 to 9,000 seats.

It will be located on the site of the Caraway Hospital, which Corporate Realty purchased in 2020 after Birmingham City Council rezoned the property for mixed use and approved more than $13 million in incentives, including to help companies acquire the property $4.1 million in grants.

Ainsley Allison, communications manager for the City of Pelham, said the road widening project is planned for 2019 to reduce traffic congestion at the new Canopy in Oak Hill. The mixed-use development will eventually become part of the city’s entertainment district.

Canopy will contain hundreds of luxury condominiums, retail stores and restaurants such as Atlanta-based Taco Mac and Mountain High Outfitters. It will be located on the other side of Amphitheater Road from the current amphitheater.

1819 News contacted Pelham Mayor Gary Waters, who discussed If Live Nation does move, which he could do in October, he asked about the city’s plans for the amphitheater property. Waters didn’t respond.

Live Nation has yet to formally notify the city of its intention to relocate, Alison said, and the city has no further comment beyond its original statement in October when plans for the potential new amphitheater became public. She said the city is still in touch with Live Nation and, to the best of her knowledge, the amphitheater’s relocation will not affect new development.

“Again, it’s too early to say they’re moving or at least closing the Oak Hill Amphitheater,” Allison said. “They didn’t express that to us.”

The Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center has agreed to prepay $5 million for the construction of the new theater. It also agreed to finance $30 million.

Jefferson County Commission selected $5 million was paid for the project in February.

Other places and organizations are required fork up $5 million each. Birmingham City Council chose to donate in January. Live Nation must still contribute $5 million, and BJCC must agree to an agreement with Corporate Realty on the proposed site to move the project forward.

1819 News reached out to Live Nation for an update on the new amphitheater deal, and whether they might manage both venues, but did not hear back.
