Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Supports ‘Abu Dhabi Community Campaign’ to Drive Organ Donation Registry

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Mubadala Health partner Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is working with the Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DoH) to promote the ‘Abu Dhabi Community Movement’ in support of the national organ donation and transplantation programme, ‘Hayat’ . The campaign was launched by the DoH to promote organ donation registries and raise awareness of the initiative. The multispecialty hospital has installed its first Hayat booth, which will be permanently placed within the hospital for patients and visitors to learn about the program and register as organ donors.

Dr. Jorge Guzman, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, opened the booth and was the first to register as an organ and tissue donor at the year-end meeting, encouraging caregivers to sign up as donors.

The DoH, in collaboration with its strategic partners, launched the campaign during the International Conference on Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Initiatives in Abu Dhabi earlier in November 2022. The campaign aims to encourage community members to sign up for organ and tissue donation as well as improve the quality of life of those suffering from organ failure.

Dr Ali Al Obaidli, Chairman of the UAE National Transplantation Council, said: “The UAE National Organ Donation and Transplantation Program has witnessed an increase in donations from post-mortem donors, which has led to impressive results in transplants of hearts, lungs, livers, pancreas and kidneys. In partnership with leading medical institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, we were able to take this initiative a step further and successfully raise awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation and the life-changing opportunities they provide for patients in need of a transplant. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, in alliance with Cleveland Clinic Transplant Center USA, one of the most comprehensive transplant programs in the world, has performed more than 330 life-changing organ transplants since the launch of the deceased donation program 2017 in the UAE. The program has seen 124 deceased donors in the UAE whose organs have saved the lives of more than 438 patients and has grown exponentially over the years. Through its transplant center, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, 166 kidney transplants, 136 livers, 12 lungs, 12 hearts and 10 pancreas transplants have been performed.

Dr Bashir Sankari, Chairman of the Specialized Institute of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi and Head of the Transplant Program, said: “We have a multi-organ transplant program in the UAE that handles heart, single and double lung, liver and pancreas transplants.
