The army chief is on an official visit to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates from Jan. 4-10, having started his first visit last week. The visit comes at a critical time as Pakistan faces another balance of payments crisis.
Prime Minister Sheikh Baz Sharif also expected He flew to the UAE today after returning from Geneva as part of Pakistan’s desperate attempt to shore up its dwindling foreign exchange reserves.
He will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who will join Gen Munir for talks with the wealthy Gulf state, the sources said.
While it is unclear what compelled Prime Minister Sheikh Baz to go to the UAE, the visit is believed to be linked to Pakistan’s worsening economic crisis.
