The British singer-songwriter will be in concert with Zack Knight in May
When British singer-songwriter and content creator Conor Maynard performed on Broadway in New York, he learned many vocal warm-ups and techniques to maximize his stage presence. “I do my best,” he said in a Zoom conversation with the City Times. “Before I got on stage, jump up and down on the spot to get the blood flowing.” That same practice had become a mantra for Connor before he took the stage as a musician.
Conor joins a fantastic line-up of performances for the Eid al-Fitr celebrations in the UAE. For his first live performance since 2019, and a performance in Dubai after a long hiatus, Connor is “super excited” and looking forward to returning to the stage. What can the crowd in the UAE expect? “I’m going to sing some new songs, as well as old ones, and make sure everyone who comes can hear what they want to hear,” Connor said.
As the country slowly returns to its pre-pandemic state, full-fledged concerts are back, and Connor is looking forward to getting out there and giving all the visitors the best show he can. “I’m going to have to do a couple of rehearsals because I’m worried I’m going to be a little rusty,” he said. “It’s been a long time, but you know, I’ll make sure I’m ready.”
It’s no secret that the pandemic has brought the entire world to a standstill. The entertainment industry has suffered as many shows, films and musical productions have been put on hold. Connor, however, feels “lucky” in a way that he has a home studio to go back to making content, despite being locked at home. While certain areas of his career have suffered, such as touring and gigs, he believes it has allowed him to “really focus” on producing new music and content, which is a plus for him.
Working with Zach Knight
For the May 8 show, Conor will also share the Coca-Cola Arena stage with one of the UK’s leading South Asian singer-songwriters, Zack Knight. However, the two never met. “We might hate each other,” Connor joked. However, the singer was excited to meet and share the stage with Zack. “He seemed like a super nice guy,” he said. “This could be the beginning of a friendship.”
This won’t be the first time Connor has shared the stage with someone he doesn’t know. He’s been through both; he doesn’t know anyone in the lineup, and quite the opposite. “Either way, the show went well and I don’t think it’s necessary or necessary (to know who you’re performing with),” he said. “However, it (knowing the lineup) created a better atmosphere.”
Connor on Arabic Music: It’s Really Beautiful
Connor was in Dubai a few months ago. Connor remembers hearing a lot of Arabic music whenever he was out or taking taxis a lot and always grabbed his ears. “I’d say, ‘Oh, that melody sounds really good.’ I think that’s because it’s so different. It’s kind of a different experience, and it feels like another one in terms of the music and the sound. planet,” he said. “It’s really beautiful and it’s well put together.” And Connor, an artist who loves cross-cultural collaborations, is “very open” to one person.
Connor came into the limelight after winning MTV’s 2012 Brand New Awards, and his inspiration and ideas came at random. “I guess I’m just inspired by random rushes or moments. It’s like a snowball effect, I have a little idea, I wait, hold on, and it just gets bigger and bigger until it’s done and ready,” Connor said, adding that he doesn’t look around for inspiration, rather it happens randomly and it can come from anything. “I get ideas from the weirdest places. I wish it had more formulas because then I could do it more often.”
Reimagining Whitney
One of Conor’s latest projects is a reimagining of Whitney Houston’s iconic single I Wanna With Somebody. “I’ve always loved this song and any version I’ve heard,” he said, adding that he also had the idea of lending the lyrics of the chorus to a sad song. “The song is very upbeat and happy, and if twisted or restructured in the right way, it might also work in a sadder, paused rhythm ballad.”

And, it all worked out for Connor, who was also going through a breakup at the time. “So it fits the feeling I’m going through, and it allows me to write the lyrics I want to write,” he said. “I think it’s a lot easier to write something real and it happens to you. In that moment, I think it’s a lot easier to write a song if you’re going through those real emotions.”
A longtime content creator, Connor continues to maintain his social media presence by posting viral content on YouTube and TikTok, where he has 12.7 million subscribers and 6.4 million followers, respectively.
