Corus Entertainment posted a loss in its latest quarter as it continued to be squeezed by an advertising slump that began last summer.
The Canadian media company’s third-quarter loss attributable to shareholders was C$495.1 million ($373.4 million), or C$2.48 per share, compared with a profit of C$33 million, or C$0.14, a year earlier.
Revenue for the period fell 8.3 percent to C$397.3 million, below the C$406.2 million expected in a FactSet analyst survey. TV ad revenue was down 12% from last year, and subscriber revenue was down 4.7%, while revenue at the company’s broadcast division was down 11%.
Corus said it now expects TV advertising revenues to decline slightly in the final quarter of the year compared to the same period a year earlier, and while it continues to expect an improving macroeconomic environment over the medium term, visibility remains limited for now.
To trim debt, Corus cut its annual dividend to C$0.12 per Class B share and C$0.115 per A share earlier this year and has not renewed its share repurchase program.
