The school principal stated that for the rest of this year, the distance learning strategy is still at the forefront of the delivery model, because some parents are still unwilling to send their wards to the school for on-site learning.
However, they reiterated that despite the rush to virtual learning last year due to the pandemic, the school has now adapted to a more nuanced distance learning model.
Campbell Douglas-Al Khail, President and CEO of GEMS Wellington College, said: “Although we are still waiting for the school’s reopening agreement for the 2021-2022 school year, we have told our families that distance learning will become an option for these families. Other schools pointed out that although most students expressed their wish to return to campus after the summer vacation, virtual and distance learning have been deeply integrated into their operations.
Sangita Chima, principal of Dubai Amity School, said: “95% of our students have confirmed that they will return to school in September. Our community is planning to reopen after the summer vacation and reopen. However, we will continue to invest in EdTech to encourage mixing And double delivery.”
The principal pointed out that this is because it is difficult to predict how the Covid situation will develop around the world in the coming months.
“We have prepared practical and effective strategies to deal with our systems and put our energy into constants such as relationships and support networks. Of course, e-learning will now become part of our DNA. Some long-term effective strategies will continue. And innovative features in redesigning learning spaces, using technology and adapting to safety regulations will be seamlessly implemented as a new way of life,” she added.
Currently, most school bus fleets operate at 50% capacity and have established Covid safety protocols, including regular hand washing and wearing masks for all students and teachers.
“Bus capacity will depend on the decision of the UAE government. The facility will be available to all students who sign up for face-to-face learning and choose a school bus,” Chima said.
Blended learning
Institutions are also keen to ensure the confidence of parents to send their wards to school in a safe environment. Therefore, they have included a distance learning option in their reopening plan and are currently awaiting approval from the Knowledge and Human Development Agency (KHDA).
Principal Mohammad Ali Kottakkulam of Dubai Gulf Indian High School said: “For the safety of children, some parents of lower grade students request to continue SL (Smart Learning). Although we can ensure that all safety measures in our school are in place and can The agreement uses buses, but we have incorporated this provision into our reopening plan, which is currently awaiting approval to respond to such requests from parents.”
The school has also begun to work hard to interact with parents and students to educate them about the reopening plan and the safety measures they have taken.
“We are working with them to understand the exact number of distance learning requests,” Kottakkulam added.
Gulf Model School principal Annie Mathew said: “We prefer to continue to use e-learning options until all communities believe that it is safe for students to go to school in person. Even so, the e-learning option may continue for disadvantaged students who may be immune-compromised.
“The school’s operating methods have rapidly changed and adapted to the new situation. The school is likely to explore further innovative and feasible methods to optimize the use of e-learning options in combination with existing models.”
Matthew also pointed out that school bus transportation needs to be developed based on changes to existing agreements. She said: “We will definitely work hard to provide transportation services for all face-to-face students in need, but logistics will play a role. It is difficult to determine at this time.”
At the same time, the agencies stated that they hope to carry out publicity activities from time to time so that everyone learns to take collective responsibility to protect themselves and others when the new semester begins.
