Czech Republic signs Israeli air defense system agreement worth 630 million US dollars | News

Prague acquired the Spyder system made by the weapon manufacturer Raphael as part of military modernization.

The Czech Republic has signed an agreement worth 630 million U.S. dollars to purchase a new air defense system from Israel, marking the latest move by the Central European country to modernize its armed forces.

Announced on Tuesday, the agreement will enable Prague to purchase the Spyder system manufactured by the Israeli state-owned company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd..

Spyder can provide protection for aircraft, helicopters, bombers, cruise missiles and other weapons.

The Czech Ministry of Defense stated that under the agreement, NATO member states will receive four short-range air defense batteries worth 13.7 billion Czech crowns (630 million US dollars). Delivery of the components will be completed in 2026.

The Spyder system will replace the outdated air defense 2K12 Kub system from the Soviet era to defend military and civilian centers such as industrial hubs, nuclear power plants, airports and other important facilities.

The gun trade in the Czech Republic and France

According to another deal announced last week, the Czech military will purchase 52 Caesar self-propelled howitzers from France’s Nexter Systems.

The agreement, valued at 8.52 billion Czech crowns (390 million US dollars), was signed on Thursday during the visit of French Defense Minister Florence Pali to Prague.

The new weapon will replace the outdated Dana system that does not meet NATO standards. Most guns will be assembled in the Czech Republic.

After major diplomatic disputes with traditional allies of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia over the recently announced trilateral Aukus security agreement, French President Emmanuel Macron called on Europe to defend its interests and build its own military capabilities.

“this [Czech deal] This is after a strategic settlement with the Czech Republic, but it is also a vision closer to what European defense policy should and should bring to us,” a French Army official told Reuters before reaching an agreement with Prague last week. Was signed.
