In 1947, mobster Benjamin “Bugsey” Siegel was shot dead in his girlfriend Virginia Hill’s hometown of Beverly Hills, California, apparently on the orders of fellow mobsters.

In 1967, boxer Muhammad Ali was found guilty of violating military service laws in Houston for refusing to be drafted and sentenced to five years in prison. (Ali’s conviction was eventually overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court).

In 1972, three days after the arrest of the Watergate burglars, President Richard Nixon met with his chief of staff, HR Haldeman, at the White House; the secret recording of the meeting ended with an infamous 18 1/2 minute gap .

In 1974, the film noir “Chinatown” starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway was released by Paramount Pictures.

In 1990, South African black nationalist Nelson Mandela and his wife Winnie arrived in New York City, embarking on an eight-city tour of the United States in their honor.

In 2014, the Obama administration introduced a host of new benefits to same-sex couples, including those living in states where same-sex marriage is illegal; the new measures range from Social Security and veterans benefits to work leave to care for a sick spouse.

In 2016, the divided U.S. Supreme Court strengthened police powers, ruling 5-3 that evidence of crimes can be used against defendants in certain circumstances even if officers did something wrong or broke the law when obtaining the evidence.

Ten years ago: Lightning started sparking more than 2,000 fires in northern and central California that eventually burned more than 1 million acres. About 18 million children under the age of 5 were eligible, and injections were initiated at several sites. Two Florida representatives have been suspended for leaking news of the death of actor and comedian Bob Saget before his family was alerted. Clela Rorex, a former Colorado county clerk considered a pioneer of the gay rights movement because he was the first public official to issue a same-sex marriage license in 1975, died at the age of 78.
