Decision on accusing Donald Trump of meddling in Georgia election draws to a close

Prosecutors investigating whether former President Donald Trump interfered in the 2020 U.S. election in Georgia called for “heightened security” as she expected to make a decision on potential charges in the summer.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis wrote to law enforcement agencies that she expects to announce the decision between July 11 and Sept. 1.

She said she wanted to take the time to coordinate with local, state and federal agencies “to ensure our law enforcement is prepared to protect the public.”

Letters were sent to the Fulton County Sheriff, the Atlanta Police Chief and the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency chief.

The Atlanta Police Department confirmed receipt of the letter and said it would “continue to monitor for possible disturbances throughout the city.”

“We stand ready to respond to demonstrations to ensure the safety of those in our communities and those exercising their First Amendment rights, or to address illegal activity as needed,” a department statement said.

The investigation began in early 2021, shortly after recordings of a phone call between Mr. Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger — in which the then-president suggested the state’s top election official could help “find “Votes Required – Open.

The scope of the investigation has gone far beyond that call.

Mr. Trump, who has announced he will enter the White House in 2024, was indicted by a grand jury in March on charges of falsifying business records to conceal payments to porn actors during the 2016 presidential election.

In Washington, a federal grand jury is investigating efforts by Trump and his allies to undo the results of the 2020 presidential election and Trump’s possible mishandling of classified documents at his Florida estate.

Trump’s legal team in Georgia said in a statement that the statement released to law enforcement “does nothing more than lay out a potential timeline for a decision.”
