Delhi customs seize $55,000 worth of gold from Abu Dhabi plane

Delhi customs officials found $55,000 worth of gold on the seat of a plane from Abu Dhabi.

The 938 grams of gold paste hidden in the pipes of the seats was discovered during an inspection by authorities at Indira Gandhi International Airport.

“Air Customs @IGI Airport searched a plane that took off from Abu Dhabi earlier and found mushy gold hidden in seat ducts,” Delhi Customs tweeted on Monday.

“938.25 grams of pure gold valued at Rs. 4.333 lakh was extracted and seized. Further investigation is ongoing.”

Officials did not reveal any details about the flight or passengers.

Apart from customs fees, the Indian government also levies GST on the manufacture and services of gold.

Anyone who buys gold has to pay sale taxand charges, which added a further 8% to the total cost.

There is no limit to the amount of gold a person can export from the UAE, and there are no taxes to pay when you leave the country.
