The growth in e-Trader license issuance is indicative of the growing momentum of e-shopping in Dubai.
Dubai’s e-Trader license, an initiative that allows start-ups in the emirate to leverage online and social media for business growth, has received overwhelming response from its launch in March 2017 until the end of 2021.
According to official data, the Business Registration and Licensing (BRL) division of the Ministry of Economy and Tourism (DET) has issued 16,409 electronic transaction licenses by the end of 2021.
The total number of electronic dealer licenses issued in 2021 reached 6,217, a 6.0% increase from 2020, as the total number of licenses reached 5,848.
“This reflects the continued focus on promoting e-commerce and Dubai’s economic competitiveness, as well as the commitment to realise the government’s vision to drive digital transformation and build awareness of electronic platforms that facilitate business activities,” DET said in a statement.
The growth in the issuance of e-Trader licenses indicates the growing momentum of e-shopping in Dubai, due to its flexible business and investment climate, the private sector and its logistical advantages, as well as its strategic location to facilitate global trade, the government said in a statement.
The growth also reflects the emirate’s importance in driving growth and supporting policies to diversify its economy, which is working to cement its position as a global e-commerce platform.
The 2020 “E-commerce Landscape in the UAE” study, jointly conducted by DET and Visa, shows that Dubai leads the fastest growing and developing e-commerce market in MENA thanks to favourable policies and strategic plans and Dubai-initiated Smart government initiatives. This digital transformation has boosted investor confidence in the industry and its opportunities for growth and development, the statement said.
e-Trader is designed to license startups and business activities operating in their place of residence, online or on social networking sites. The license is issued electronically and is designed to guide traders on the right path into the business world.
According to the Brazilian Real Industry Report, 79% of electronic trader licenses issued in 2021 will be professional and 21% commercial. Information technology, ready-to-wear, womenswear tailoring and design, handicrafts, menswear tailoring and design, publishing and printing services, facilities management, marketing services and food preparation topped the list of licensing events issued in 2021.
Through the e-Trader license, DET seeks to regulate and improve the ease of electronic business, to find platforms to support and develop trade, and to connect clients with traders. The licensee cannot open a shop/shop, but three visas are available if the ownership is 100% UAE and the legal responsibility lies with the licensee. — issacjohn@khaleejtimes.com
