“This fight for the light world title is really a huge advertisement to put Abu Dhabi on the boxing world map,” Al Otaiba told National.

“Saudi Arabia is the first to host two world heavyweight title fights, and the Bivor Ramirez match will further strengthen the sport’s presence in the region.”

Kingdom hosted Oleksandr Usyk def. Anthony Joshua In their rematch last month, while Brit reports his defeat against Andy Ruiz Jr. in 2019.

“We are not involved in professional boxing, but develop the sport at an amateur level by organizing fights, which is obviously a platform for boxers to turn professional,” Al Otaiba said.

“We may not be involved in hosting the title fight, but we believe this is an important step forward in many ways to raise awareness of the sport, especially among locals.”

Meanwhile, the UAE Confederation has broken new ground by signing an agreement with its Serbian counterpart that will see reciprocal matches between the national teams of the two countries, as well as various exchange programmes.

“This is the first memorandum of understanding ever [memorandum of understanding] We have already signed with any country and our work will begin immediately with the first high performance training for the UAE team in November,” said Serbian Boxing Federation President Nenad Borovcanin.

“We are excited about this partnership and have many plans to improve boxing by organising home and away matches between the two national teams, exchange programmes and training of technical staff.”

Al Otaiba is completing 10 years as President of the UAE Federation and believes they are on the right path to take amateur boxing in the country to the next level.

“We have grown a lot under the best efforts of our federation,” he said of his progress during that period. “It’s not that we don’t have challenges, it’s that we have achieved encouraging results every year.”

UAE boxing reaches a new level when Hanan Al Zeyoudi makes history by becoming first Emirati woman to win a medal [bronze] At the 2021 Asian Boxing Championships in Dubai.

“We have seen a lot of Emirati boxers grow in the league over the past few years,” said Al Otaiba.

“We work very hard to provide them with the technical skills and opportunities to compete at an international level.

“We have domestic competitions every month and the national team regularly competes in regional, continental and international championships.”

According to Al Otaiba, the signing of the MoU with the Serbian Federation is another step in providing more opportunities for local boxers and raising the bar by providing more time to work with professional coaches.

As the head of Asian Boxing, Al Otaiba has also made many contributions at the intercontinental level over the past four years, including setting up bonuses for amateur boxers, hosting the first boxing grand slam in China and the U22 Asian Championships.

“We built a solid platform for Asian boxing as much as we could, and we achieved that as a team,” he said.

“We created a committee to help national federations that don’t have the resources to compete in continental competitions.”

Al Otaiba firmly believes that boxing will continue to have a strong reputation as an Olympic medal sport.

“There are a lot of martial arts that are becoming more popular in the region and around the world, but I believe boxing will have a place in the world of combat sports.”
