dnata to process over 82 million bags through DXB in 2022

[ad_1]

dnata is the world’s leading provider of airline and travel services, handling more than 82 million bags through all three terminals at Dubai International Airport (DXB) in 2022.

dnata handles baggage for more than 100 airlines and millions of passengers traveling from DXB to 253 destinations. Consolidating and handling the flow of passenger baggage and cargo between the three terminals, and making sure the right items are loaded on the right planes at the right time, requires careful planning and a lot of people.

During peak operating periods, more than 1,300 dnata employees work in close synchronization to deliver every bag on time, helping airlines maintain flight schedules and deliver an exceptional customer experience.

Finely crafted operation
As passengers pass through any of DXB’s three terminals, dnata’s military precision operations are taking place five floors below their feet. DXB’s Baggage Handling System (BHS) transports baggage using innovative conveyor belts and elevators to move departing and arriving bags. 160 kilometers of baggage tracks circle under the concourse floor of Terminal 3 alone.

The process of directing bags to their destination begins 180 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Any bags checked in before then are stored in the automated early bag drop facility at T3, which has a capacity of 15,000. Departing luggage is transported on its unique yellow tray, which is attached to the luggage’s luggage tag for accurate tracking, and will undergo up to five security checks as it passes through the system. It then goes into a waiting container, or unit load device (ULD), before being delivered to the aircraft.

As they travel through the BHS at 2.5 meters per second, the bags enter a secure high-speed transfer tunnel, traveling at 7.5 meters per second, faster than passenger trains in the adjacent tunnel.

DXB: World Transportation Hub
With Dubai perfectly positioned as a global hub, many passengers and luggage are connecting flights to their final destinations. 64% of all passengers arriving at Terminal 3 in 2022 will be in transit, while Transit traffic at Terminal 2 will account for 45% of all passengers.

Prepare to transfer luggage to your destination, starting mid-flight. 6 hours before your flight arrives at DXB, dnata will be ready to receive your bags, knowing how many bags will need to be transferred for each aircraft, as well as the size, weight and final destination of each bag.

Carefully planned
The location of the ULD on each aircraft also needs to be carefully planned based on where the bags are going and their priorities. For example, many airlines want to prioritize the bags of first-class passengers, while bags earmarked for connecting flights also need to be processed immediately and efficiently.

Baggage that cannot enter the main system because it is oversized or unusual can complicate the process. Items that require manual handling, such as televisions, sports equipment, child car seats and even holy water, make up about 5% of all luggage.

The entire operation is carefully monitored and managed by the BHS control room located below the arrival baggage hall of T3. Here, a giant digital screen projects the entire color-coded baggage handling system, along with CCTV footage, as operators keep tabs on every part of the massive operation 24/7/365.

Jaffar Dawood, dnata’s Senior Vice President UAE Airport Operations, said: “dnata is proud to serve the millions of passengers who pass through the world’s largest airport.

“dnata ensures that passengers travel with confidence that their bags will be handled efficiently and safely, and they will be met at their destination. This is thanks to the complex logistical planning by our team, and the hour-by-hour handling of the baggage handlers every day. This keeps flights on time Running, passengers and cargo arriving on time.”

As one of the world’s largest aviation and travel service providers, dnata provides ground handling, cargo, travel and catering and retail services at more than 130 airports in more than 30 countries on six continents. – trade arab news agency
