DoH partners with US-based Eversight to establish UAE’s first ophthalmology and tissue bank

ABU DHABI – Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), the regulatory body for the healthcare industry in the emirate, and US-based Eversight, one of the world’s leading not-for-profit eye banks, have partnered to establish the UAE’s first Eye and Organize the bank.

The agreement will see the creation, development and operation of a comprehensive and seamless eye transplant framework in the UAE.

The meeting was attended by DoH Chairman Abdulla bin Mohamed Al Hamed and Eversight Global Development Director Carrie Wolverton, and the partnership was manifested at Eversight through a memorandum of understanding signed by DoH Undersecretary and Global Development Director Dr. Jamal Mohammed Al Kaabi.

Through this strategic partnership, DoH and Eversight will establish a foundation in three phases of project design, implementation and management. At an early stage, the two entities will focus on implementing the necessary arrangements for the Abu Dhabi Eye and Tissue Bank as an importer of corneas and other ophthalmology-related tissues in the region. In addition to integrating the Eye and Tissue Banking program into the UAE’s national organ donation and transplantation programme.

For its part, Eversight will develop a comprehensive medical framework to standardize and operate procedures across all clinical functions within the Abu Dhabi Eye and Tissue Bank, based on international best practice in Abu Dhabi.

Dr Al Kaabi said: “Under the direction of our wise leadership, Abu Dhabi continues to work with leading international institutions to elevate its national healthcare operations in all aspects. Through this partnership, we aim to further improve healthcare outcomes and provide a fast and seamless procedure for all patients in the UAE who need eye tissue transplants.”
