Mattoon – The Douglas-Hart Nature Center in Mattoon has announced their upcoming July event. All events are held at the Nature Center unless otherwise stated.

Whiteside Gardens Tour: Join one of Douglas-Hart’s docents for a one-hour tour of Whiteside Gardens. These tours are offered on the first Saturday of each month from 10am to November 1st. No registration required, just register at the Welcome Center at 9:50am. The parking lot is located on the west side of 1820e. Use the asphalt driveway to cross the road. The Welcome Center features bathrooms, a gift shop and a small exhibition area. The tour lasts about 1 hour. Certain areas of the garden have stairs and uneven paths. Accessible tours are available.
Bat monitoring: Thursday, July 14 from 8pm to 9pm
The Douglas-Hart Nature Center has just received an updated forest management plan that involves wildlife habitat improvement and conservation, requiring volunteers to join their citizen science team for wildlife monitoring. Citizen science will involve monitoring insects, amphibians, and more.
Their first need is bat monitoring. Training includes observing habitats and using electronic bat monitors. Once trained, you can also monitor on your own time. Registration is required. In case of bad weather, the activity will be cancelled.
This position requires the following competencies:
- Able to walk 0.5 miles on smooth, flat surfaces. (Fixed locations can be used if desired, such as standing still and monitoring habitats or activity sites).
- Ability to view, open and record racket pitches from different positions using racket monitoring equipment.
- Ability to accurately view and fill in data sheets.

Live to Learn, “Grass for Prairie Wildlife”: July 9th at 9am.
Learn about managing grasslands and the grasses that make them special from speaker Bob Gillespie. He will discuss the different grasses that make up our savannah, the indigenous and friendly Eurasian grasses that are of great use for wildlife conservation. Learn about grassland management, planting and establishment, and those problem grasses that work for us.
“Little Things Among Lilies”, Wednesday, July 13 at 10am at Whiteside Garden, suitable for adults ages 2-4; free, donations appreciated
Littles in the Lilies is perfect for kids who want to play, learn and explore in the garden! Great for kids ages 2-4, but everyone is welcome.
Summer Food Trucks at Friendship Garden, Wednesday, July 13, 11am-1pm:
Visit the Garden of Friendship monthly and enjoy lunch from the Don Sol food truck. Douglas-Hart is adding a new supplier of cold brew coffee: both suppliers will donate 10% of their proceeds to the Douglas-Hart Foundation.
bird club, Tuesday, July 26, 6pm; free
Doulgas-Hart invites novice and seasoned bird watchers to learn from each other, share discoveries and get involved in bird watching. The club meets once a month for presentations and discussions, with occasional field trips or outings.
Story time and snuggle, Wednesday, July 27, 10am; free
Bring your stuffed animal and snuggle as a naturalist reads a nature-themed story each month. Great for kids ages 2-4, but everyone is welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is encouraged.

cosmic blue comics
From the Journal Gazette, November 22, 1992, this photo of Cosmic Blue Comics in Mattoon; I’ve been there almost every Saturday afternoon for about two years. That little back room you see on the right side of the Coca-Cola logo is where they keep a lot of, I mean a lot of long boxes of back issues. I still have the bagged copy of the first issue of “The Story of the Bean World” that I found there. Sadly, this location is now just a “green space”.
Marton Arcade
Pictured on June 2, 1982, Journal Gazette’s Bob Murray of Shelbyville demonstrates his dominance of the TRON arcade game at the “Merry-go-round” arcade at the Cross County Mall Latin castles, not long after that, ceased to be a thing. I spend almost every Saturday in that arcade, maybe with the exact same hairstyle. But no work clothes. I’m more of a “Pacific” kid.
Icenogle
The Journal Gazette, a grocery store in Icenogle, is pictured on November 28, 1988. Coming from Cooks Mills, we don’t shop at Icenogle’s very often…but when we did, even as kids, I knew it was the way grocery stores should be in a perfect world, and it wasn’t just because they had wood floors, magazines There are comic books on the shelf, or a lot, and I mean a lot, trading cards in wax packs.
Cook Mills
I had long since left Cooks Mills when the Journal Gazette ran the Showcase project on Adam’s Groceries on June 13, 1998, but for a while I was probably one of the kids in that picture; because if it’s summer, you have a Bike, you live in Cooks Mills, then there you are. In the final report, they still had the Tab in the Pepsi-branded cooler. I’m seriously considering asking my money people if I can afford to reopen this place.

Pictured is the July 16, 1987 “Journal Gazette,” an ad for Mister Music, formerly at the Cross County Mall. I didn’t buy records at that age, but I would eventually, and that’s where it all failed. If you don’t think it doesn’t sound “cool” to hang out with your friends at the record store on a Friday night with a hot driver’s license in your wallet, you’d be right. But it’s the best thing a geek like me can do. Wherever you are today, owner of Mister Music, please know that the Minutemen album I found in your cheap dumpster changed my life.

April 18, 1994, Journal Gazette, Portrait of the author as a young man about to throw his guitar through the target in that year’s Sound Source Music Guitar Throwing Contest. Check out my grunge era hoodies, yes… look closely, these are the Air Jordans you see on my feet. Addendum: No matter what the tangent says, I haven’t won a guitar.

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow, Werther’s Youth Club, June 20, 1991, Magazine Gazette. I’m not “cool” enough to hang out in the back of Werther in “heyday”, and “cool enough” means “not skilled enough at parking lot fights”. If only I could hack it now.
