Authorities said 45 bags containing human remains were found in central Mexico.

The bags were found in a canyon on the outskirts of Guadalajara, according to the Jalisco state prosecutor’s office, adding that the remains were from both men and women.

They were discovered as authorities searched for seven young call center workers who disappeared from the Zapopan area last week.

It is unclear whether the seven remains were among those found, and the search for more body parts continues.

Such discoveries are not uncommon in Mexico, where more than 110,000 people are listed as missing, many of whom may be victims of the country’s drug cartels.

Jalisco has the highest number of missing people — 15,000, according to government figures — and thousands more unidentified bodies in morgues and cemeteries.

One of similar discoveries in recent years was the February 2021 discovery of 18 plastic bags containing severed body parts near a highway overpass in Guadalajara.

In November 2020, 113 bodies and other human remains were found in mass graves in the town of El Salto, outside Guadalajara.
