DP World Announces First Commercial Use of Boxbay System at South Korean Port

[ad_1]

DP World, one of the world’s leading smart logistics providers, has announced the first commercial use of its revolutionary Boxbay High Bay Storage (HBS) system at Busan Container Terminal, South Korea, the world’s sixth largest container port.

This pioneering technology has put Dubai in the global spotlight as DP World, a leading provider of intelligent end-to-end supply chain logistics, continues to adopt innovative approaches to improve the efficiency and fluidity of global trade.

The Boxbay system was developed in a joint venture between Dubai Group and German industrial engineering specialist SMS group.

The development of this technology also reflects Dubai’s growing global role in facilitating and streamlining global trade and supply chains.

Pusan Newport Corporation (PNC) and Boxbay FZCO signed a contract today (March 8) to initiate design and engineering work for the site to implement the storage system at the terminal.

The signing of the contract took place in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone in the presence of Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World Group, and Burkhard Dahmen, Chairman and CEO of SMS Group, the partner behind Boxbay.

Bin Sulayem said: “This is the starting point for the future of trade. We have taken a technology that has already proven its effectiveness in the German metal industry and adapted it further to create Boxbay, an innovative container storage system that facilitates global trade.”

“Our pilot program in Jebel Ali has demonstrated the benefits of a fully automated, sustainably powered high-rack storage system. I am proud that DP World has led this innovation, which will now be adopted in Busan. This technology reflects our ongoing Strive to adopt technologies that can enhance trade flows and further enhance Dubai’s position as a global leader in the ports and logistics industry,” he added.

PNC already operates one of the best-performing container terminals in Asia, and the addition of BOXBAY technology will allow PNC to further improve efficiency.

BOXBAY high rack storage technology will seamlessly integrate with existing ARMG/truck operations as a retrofit to existing vacant storage areas.

The system provides direct access to each container at any time, reducing unproductive movements by 350,000 per year. This will reduce overall truck repair time by 20 percent, further enhancing PNC’s offering to its customers.

The storage system, originally created for handling heavy metal coils, was improved for port logistics after SMS group proved the technology in the metal industry. DP World and SMS group established a pilot facility in Jebel Ali’s Terminal 4 in January 2021.

As of June 2022, 190,000 container shipments have been carried out under real operating conditions, validating the market maturity of the system.

Tiemen Meester, Chief Operating Officer, Ports and Terminals, DP World, said: “With the introduction of the Boxbay high-bay storage system, we will be able to better serve our customers while keeping our people safe and reducing our carbon footprint in the environment.”

Boxbay systems are fully automatic and include additional safety features. He added that DP World also intends to power the storage system using solar energy generated by photovoltaic panels on its roof, complementing DP World’s efforts to decarbonize its operations.-TradeArabia News Service
