Dubai Airshow opens to industry amid COVID-19

[ad_1]

Dubai’s biennial air show opened on Sunday, and the world is still affected by the pandemic and the aviation industry hit hard by the coronavirus, but it is getting better. Boeing with Airbus Traditionally, it has been the star of the air trade show, competing for multi-billion dollar Gulf Air purchases, and finalizing the details a few minutes before the back-to-back press conference.

However, due to the downturn in flying and travel during the COVID-19 pandemic and global supply chain delays affecting aircraft manufacturers, this year’s five-day exhibition is expected to be much quieter than in previous years.

Dubai It entered a brief lockdown last year, but has since opened its doors to vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers, trying to attract leisure and business consumption, and attract tourists to its multi-billion-dollar Expo 2020 site.

The Dubai Air Show is one of the first major air trade shows to be held since the beginning of the pandemic.

The apron outside the exhibition hall showcases the latest innovations in commercial aviation and the global arms trade, as well as the company’s continued promotion of hardware sales.

Boeing brought the new 777-9 airliner from Seattle, which is the longest 777X flight to date, as it is undergoing continuous testing and awaiting regulatory approval.

Boeing said the plane will become the world’s largest and most efficient twin-engine jet.

Emirates, the largest airline in the Middle East, has ordered 126 777Xs, but the Dubai-based airline expressed disappointment with the delay in its delivery, which is not expected to happen before the end of 2023.

Boeing continues to review its 737 Max aircraft, which until recently was grounded worldwide after two crashes that killed nearly 350 people.

Boeing had to make changes to the flight software that played a role in the crash, paid an undisclosed amount to airlines affected by the grounding of the plane, and has resolved dozens of complaints raised by the families of the passengers who died in the crash. File a lawsuit.

Airbus led reporters on a tour of an A320neo, which has been converted into a luxury business jet, equipped with a large bed, walk-in shower and spacious seating area with sofa and coffee table.

China’s state-owned defense company CATIC displayed a series of anti-aircraft missiles, ammunition and fighter jets.

Also on display is the Russian Sukhoi Su-75 Checkmate fighter, which will be shown to the public later on Sunday.

Since the official recognition of Israel in a deal facilitated by the Trump administration last year, the United Arab Emirates has been trying to acquire the American F-35, which has a lower price.

Under the leadership of President Joe Biden, the deal has slowed down.

When inspecting an American-made Chinook CH-47, an UAE pilot pointed out that the transport helicopter has been supporting the UAE military’s recent missions in Yemen and Afghanistan.

At the same time, after the normalization of diplomatic relations between Israel and the UAE last year, Israeli companies showed off their hardware for the first time at an air show.

The state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries Corporation displayed a series of manned and unmanned naval and aerial drones.

Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Company demonstrated its “drone dome”, which can detect and destroy drones with lasers.

Someone saw UAE defense officials asking about the range and weight of the anti-UAV system in the Israel Pavilion. A total of six Israeli companies participated in the air show.

Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz described the partnership between the UAE and Israel as a “strategic asset” and said in a statement that the involvement of the Ministry of Defense “reflects the deepening of relations between the two countries.”

Both countries are deeply concerned about Iran, and Iran will resume negotiations on its nuclear agreement with the United States and other world powers.

The air show is held near Dubai’s Al Maktoum Airport, which is the second and smaller international hub of Dubai’s main airport. Dubai is the world’s busiest airport for international travel.

With the introduction of vaccines in many countries around the world, the entire aviation industry is recovering from a net loss of approximately US$138 billion last year.

Nevertheless, the entire industry will still face losses this year and next year. The International Air Transport Association predicts that airlines will have a net loss of US$11.6 billion in 2022 and a loss of nearly US$52 billion this year.

Although commercial travel remains uncertain in the context of rising infection rates in some countries, freight volumes are already higher than pre-pandemic levels. Some airlines have removed seats on their grounded passenger flights and converted their aircraft into freighters.

This year, more than 100 American companies participated in the exhibition.

“We are committed to deepening and strengthening this important strategic relationship,” said Sean Murphy, Chargé d’affaires of the U.S. Embassy, thanking the UAE for its help during the U.S.-led withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The US State Department assisted in the evacuation of approximately 190 Afghans to Abu Dhabi last week, including well-trained American Afghan pilots who fled to Uzbekistan after the Taliban took over the country in August.
