Dubai, more than 250 individuals actively participated in the yearly interfaith iftar event at the Gurudwara.
Individuals hailing from diverse nationalities and faiths congregated at the annual iftar hosted at Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara in Jebel Ali on Thursday. The resonating call to prayer for maghrib prayers, known as the adhan, echoed through the walls of the Gurudwara, uniting people of varied beliefs as they convened to break their fast within the Sikh temple’s premises in Dubai.
Exemplifying the UAE’s commitment to principles of religious freedom, tolerance, and harmonious coexistence, more than 250 individuals actively participated in the yearly interfaith iftar event at the Gurudwara. It was an evening characterized by unity and the exchange of blessings during the sacred month of Ramadan. Dr. Surender Singh Kandhari, the chairman of Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara, highlighted, “Ramadan is a time of reflection, devotion, and compassion. It’s a month where unity and empathy prevail, transcending boundaries of faith and culture.”
Bubbles Kandhari, Vice-Chairperson of Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara, Dubai, recounted the inception of the interfaith iftar, stating, “We had already started the interfaith Conference in 2012, which is 12 years now. That’s when we first realized there are so many communities and nationalities here. Therefore, we started with this.” She emphasized the exponential growth of the event, reflecting on the diverse participation and camaraderie experienced during Ramadan.
The Dubai iftar welcomed esteemed guests including Sunjay Sudhir, Indian Ambassador to the UAE; Major General Ahmed Khalfan Al Mansoori from Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD); Mirza Al Sayegh, a prominent Emirati member and Former Diplomat; Venu Rajamony, Former Indian Ambassador; Mohammed Al Muhairi, Director, Community Development Authority (CDA) Dubai; alongside representatives from various diplomatic corps, faith leaders, and community members.
Mirza Al Sayegh emphasized the message of peaceful coexistence, stating, “This is a spiritual place that shows our country’s heritage and the Al Maktoum’s love and affection towards other communities.” He acknowledged the significance of fostering relationships with diverse nationalities, echoing the sentiments of appreciation for the UAE’s inclusive environment.
Sunjay Sudhir reflected on the diversity present at the Dubai Gurudwara, affirming, “What I see all around me are people of different religions, faiths, and nationalities.” He expressed gratitude towards the UAE’s leadership for nurturing an environment of harmony and tolerance, enabling individuals to contribute to the nation’s progress irrespective of their backgrounds.
The evening witnessed the presence of Imams, Christian clergy, and Bahai representatives, further enriching the spirit of inclusivity. Bishop Paolo Martinelli, the head of the Catholic Church in the UAE Dubai, underscored the significance of interfaith dialogue, stating, “It’s a pleasure for me to be here during Ramadan and an opportunity to meet people from different religions and faiths.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration and understanding among diverse communities for fostering peace and coexistence.
Prominent Dubai-based businessmen, including Kamal Vachani, Partner, Al Maya Group, lauded the event as an inspiring manifestation of unity and diversity. He commended the initiative for embodying the values of tolerance, compassion, and solidarity.
