Overall, the Emirate of Dubai and the UAE are the main habitats for many migratory birds. Shallow coastal waters, inland waterways, mangroves and salt marshes are essential elements for birds to escape the frozen polar regions of Asia and Siberia while seeking warmer climates in Africa.
Due to its geographical location and climate, the UAE receives a large number of migratory birds every year. Two important bird migration paths overlap with the UAE, the bird migration path from East Africa to West Asia and the Central Asia path, while birds from Northern Europe and Asia visit the UAE with breeding areas as their destinations.
The protected areas distributed in various regions of the emirate of Dubai constitute an important habitat for hundreds of migratory birds each year, such as Socotra cormorants, black gulls, white-cheeked terns, crested cats, black grouses and yellow-necked sparrows. There are wading birds and birds of prey, such as ospreys and peregrine falcons and small birds, as well as types of storks found in coastal areas and marshes, such as beaks, herons, and flamingos, as well as different types of ducks.
