Two maintenance workers have been jailed for stealing Dh815,000 from a villa’s rubbish bin.

An Arab woman has lodged a report that money she stashed in a small bin on the terrace of her villa was stolen while she was on vacation abroad.

A team of investigators scoured the area and collected evidence. They also checked the surveillance video and found that the theft was carried out by two maintenance personnel who entered the property for air-conditioning maintenance at the request of the villa community maintenance company.

The two workers have been identified and arrested. During interrogation, the first accused said that he and his colleagues found Dh815,000 in the trash. They agreed to split the money equally among themselves. He also said he had sent Dh345,000 to family members living abroad. The second accused said he had sent Dh322,000 to his family in his home country.

Money sent abroad was recovered. The trial court found the maintenance workers guilty and sentenced them to three months in prison before being deported. They were also fined Dh165,000.
